Where are these kids from? Who knows? All we know is that they are 5th graders. This was the first Mystery Skype of the year. Our greeter (Gavin) went up and said Hi to the kids. Then they played rock, paper, scissors. We had to play it 3 times until someone got a turn. It was us, but we decided to alternate turns. We asked if they live east of the Mississippi river. They said no so we could chose the states on the west side of the Mississippi River. They asked the same question. We said yes. Then we asked if there state borders another country. They said yes so we could chose they states Washington, Montana, North Dakota on the bottom of Canada and California, Arizona, New Mexico, and Texas on top of Mexico. Then we asked them if there state starts with a vowel. They said no so they didn't live in Arizona. Then the kids asked if we lived near Lake Michigan, so we said YES!! Then we asked if they were next to the Pacific Ocean. They said Yes. They asked if our Capital was Springfield. We said Yes!!! Then we chose a state and crossed our fingers to be right. We chose California. They said Yes!!! Yeah we got it! Then they asked if we lived in Illinois. We said Yes! We both got each other's states. Then we told facts about our state and they went first. They have 600 kids in their school! They also told us that they lived in a suburb of Los Angeles. They start school at 8:15 and it was 8:48 at the time that they told us that. We learned the California is 2 hours behind us. Then we told them facts about our state. We had a lot of fun doing our first Mystery Skype.

Do you know who lives east of the rocky mountains and borders another country? It does not border a great lake and does not border the Atlantic Ocean. Do you know what state it is? Yes, of course they live in Colchester, Vermont! They also live in the east coast. They are about a little bit close to Canada. There is about 17,000 people that live in their city. They live in a rural area, and they are second graders in Mrs. Laroses' class. When we heard about it people kept on saying that they are pretty good for second graders and believe me, they are! We love to skype with them again, and remember this is a mystery skype!

Today we had a Google Hangout with a class from La du Bonnet, Manitoba, Canada. It was fun to talk with a group of 4th graders who lived in another country. We asked a couple of questions to narrow down the province that they lived in. Canada is split into provinces and territories instead of states like the USA. We found out that they are big hockey fans, and we told them that we are Chicago Blackhawk fans. They have some interesting hobbies too, some students enjoy "trapping" which is trapping animals (like beavers) for their fur. We had a great time chatting with students from Canada and hope to continue to connect with them on Twitter this year!

Today we skyped with another 4th grade class from Iowa. This is the third class we have connected with from Iowa, we think the kids in Iowa really like to skype! The class we skyped with was from Mitchellville, Iowa. This is a small town in a rural area. We found that the biggest urban area near Mitchellville is Des Moines, which is the capital of Iowa. The students shared a really interesting fact with us, they said, "There are four times as many hogs than people in the state of Iowa." We looked up the population of Iowa and found that it is roughly 3 million people. That means there are around 12 million hogs in Iowa. Whoa! That's a lot of hogs. They explained to us that they mostly use the hogs for meat- pork and bacon. It was fun chatting with another class from Iowa!

Today we did a Google Hangout with a 4th grade class from BUENOS AIRES, ARGENTINA! Google Hangout is similar to Skype, but instead of using a Skype account, we used a Google accounts. This time we knew in advance that the group of students were from Buenos Aires. They speak Spanish in Argentina, so the students wanted to practice their English skills with us. They asked use questions about responsibility in school. We asked them questions about life in Buenos Aires. We found out that they are big soccer fans there too, except for in English they call soccer "football." That made sense to us though, because in Spanish soccer is "futbol." It was pretty interesting to talk to a group of students in a different country and continent!

Today we skyped with a 4th grade class from Fishers, Indiana. They are similar to us in that they live in a suburb of a larger city- Indianapolis. We found it interesting that they are in a different time zone that us! They are on the Eastern Standard Time and we are on the Central Standard Time. They are one hour ahead of us!

Today we skyped with a class from Marion, Iowa. Marion is a suburb of Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Just like us, the students we met live in the suburbs! We took a look at Marion on Google Earth and observed that it looked similar to Des Plaines. We are very close in latitude, which means our climate is pretty similar!

Today we skyped with a class from Solon, Iowa. We asked yes/no questions to figure out the state they lived in, then we asked questions about their state, city, and school. They live in the Midwest, so they have a similar climate as us. Our new friends live in a rural area, which is different from where we live in the suburbs!
